Project Inquiry
Ukraine generates over 462.4 million tonnes of waste annually,
but only 22% is recycled. This poses a serious threat to the environment and public health. The war has introduced additional challenges, including demolition debris and limited resources for effective waste management in the communities.

The Novobilouska community in the Chernihiv region, which suffered significant destruction, is in urgent need of a sustainable waste management system.
About
the Project
The project focuses on developing and implementing a sustainable waste management system that aligns with the requirements of the new legislation and the principles of green reconstruction. This approach aims to ensure environmental safety and support the long-term sustainable development of the community.
The waste management concept for the Novobilouska community is designed to help transition from reactive waste handling to a strategic management model. The document includes an analysis of the current situation, projections of waste generation for the coming years, and tailored recommendations based on the draft Regional Waste Management Plan for the Chernihiv Region through 2030.
Project Impact
As a result of the project, the Novobilouska community received a tailored waste management concept. Once the Regional Waste Management Plan for the Chernihiv Region is officially approved, this concept will serve as the foundation for the community’s local waste management plan and can be integrated into broader Recovery Plans.This will enable the community to:

- develop well-grounded infrastructure;
- plan resources and attract investment;
- сollaborate with neighboring communities to reduce costs;
- implement modern technologies.

The document lays the foundation for meaningful change: less landfill disposal, increased recycling, greater efficiency, and reduced environmental impact.
